Police arrest four over alleged ATM card swapping, armed robbery in Enugu

The police in Enugu state have arrested four male suspects for armed robbery, unlawful possession of ammunition, and fraudulent ATM card swapping.

One of the suspects, Aneke Felix Ogbonna, aged 26, was arrested for allegedly swapping the ATM cards of some bank customers in the state.

The police spokesperson in the state, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed in a statement on Monday morning that the suspect was arrested at a commercial bank along Agbani Road, Enugu on 06/12/2023 at about 8.30 a.m.

According to Ndukwe, the suspect and his accomplices, who escaped, had unsuspectingly swapped the ATM card of the bank’s customer before his arrest.

He said: “Several banks’ ATM cards bearing different names were recovered from him, while he confessed to having severally committed the fraudulent act of ATM card swapping with his criminal gang members at large.”

The police also disclosed that the operatives on December 7, 2023, at about 5 p.m., upon receipt of a distress call on an armed robbery operation, hastened up to Phase 2 axis of Independence Layout and arrested one suspect, Chukwudi Nweze aged 29, while his cohorts escaped.

He added: “One locally fabricated pistol was recovered from him. Similarly, on 26/11/2023 at about 10.45 p.m., Police Operatives from the Command’s New Haven Police Division intercepted and arrested one Chibuike Omeje, 26, along Chime Avenue in New Haven, Enugu, while one locally fabricated double-barrelled pistol was recovered from him.

“In a related development, Police Operatives of Number 3 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Enugu, while on routine stop and search duty along the Enugu/Onitsha expressway, on 06/12/2023 at about 11.50 a.m., intercepted and arrested one Alozie Clinton Chidubem aged 22, and found in his unlawful possession two live cartridges.

The spokesman disclosed that all the suspects shall be arraigned in court and prosecuted accordingly once ongoing investigations into the cases were concluded.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Command’s Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reiterated the firm commitment of the police to maintain maximum security, law, and order in the state, especially in this yuletide.

The commissioner enjoined the citizenry to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and continue to support the Police with credible information required to further rid the State of obdurate criminal elements.
